By accident or design I have been fortunate to see The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel several times on airplanes lately. Although favorably reviewed by the critics it seems to have been somewhat dismissed by a troop of younger moviegoers as being a cliché or too repetitive to make much of an impact. The fact that the film is most decidedly about finding the courage to start a new life, just at the point when everything is supposed to be neatly sewn up, seems lost on them. A poignant reminder that exuberance is no match for experience, and some experiences have to be savoured to be truly appreciated.
The movie stands as an anthem to those who choose to find new purpose in their retirement and I find something new each time that I watch it.
It was F. Scott Fitzgerald who once said “vitality shows not only in the ability to persist, but in the ability to start over.” I don’t know if watching this movie will change your life – but it certainly did wonders for mine. Click here to view the trailer and see what you think.
