Olderhood Insights: Personal observations, comments and chuckles about life during the employment years… and life, now in retirement, looking backwards.
“It is better to sleep on things beforehand than lie awake about them afterward.”
Gracian, The Art of Worldly Wisdom, (1647)
Impetuous I am. Well, less so as I’ve got older, but I always had a reputation of “flaring up” when I thought something wasn’t right. I wouldn’t necessarily rant and rave (well, maybe some times), but I would typically knee-jerk and address the issue right away. To some extent I still do – but much less these days. I cannot count the number of times when I’ve reacted with a flurry of words – sometimes big ones, sometimes bad ones – and I would normally speak with a very dictatorial voice, with large amounts of hand-waving and body language – not to mention the face scowling. Time and time again, I would – after the event of course – reflect on it and think “oops, went a bit far old boy”. Then I would lie awake that night, regretting what I had said, and wondering what the repercussions, or backlash would be. Fortunately, my older head is slowly turning into a wiser one (repeat – slowly !!).
