A Blossoming Career by Bill Storie

A Blossoming Career by Bill Storie

When I was in high school, on the last day of the term before Christmas all the kids would mill around doing nothing. I had an idea.

I went to see the headmaster – a fellow I didn’t like. Mind you, he wasn’t too keen on me either. I was in the final year and was a school prefect, so he had to entertain my idea at least.

I asked if I could use the school’s intercom system which was based on the stage in the assembly hall. I wanted to do a request programme throughout the last day. I’d get the other kids to bring in records (no CDs or digital stuff then !!), we’d store them on stage then ask for requests to play the songs.

“Please play “Only the Lonely” for a girl in S7 that I like but she doesn’t know I exist”

And on it went. We received tons of requests.

I called it “Radio Active” – cute huh ?

But a few days before we went on air I wrote to a local pirate radio station (Radio Clyde) and asked one of their DJs if he would send me a script from one of his shows so that I could chat in between requests.

Surprisingly he called me. Wow. This guy was really famous.

“Hi Billy,” he said. “I got your letter. Great idea about the radio gig. I love the name. But, we don’t have scripts. I have a few ideas what I’ll talk about today then I wing it. I make it up as I go along.”

I was stunned.

This guy did a 6-hour show every day and he never used a script. Boy, was I impressed. It just never crossed my mind that anyone in TV or radio could work without a script. I really felt like a country hick. Maybe everyone knew that scripts were taboo in the big world.

His response was certainly enlightening. I carried the concept for the rest of my life and certainly never put it into practice.

Until now.

As you have been seeing our Facebook posts, we are starting a brand-new radio show about retirement stuff, planning and lifestyle changes etc on a local radio station here in Bermuda – Magic 102.7

I’m producing the whole thing with compete editorial control and my co-host will be Robin Trimingham, the co-Founder of this phenomena called Olderhood.

We’re doing a 2-hour live gig (see how I remember that word from way back then?). We’ll have guests and interesting material and funny stuff and music and call-ins. Really looking forward to it.

We’ve been told (not verified I admit) that this will be the ONLY Internet Radio show I the world which addresses EVERY aspect of the retirement process. There are many shows about finance or health but none that we have found where everything will be discussed. Fancy lil ole Olderhood making international media history. Who knew.

So there we are after some 50 years later my radio career which started so well but spluttered in the middle has finally reared up again at this age.

And they say retired fools can’t do new things with their life.

I hope you’ll listen in – because no matter where you are in the world, albeit depending on time zones, you will nonetheless be able to listen to us live. http://magic1027bermuda.com/

Click on that and you’re all set.

We start at 9 am Bermuda time and finish at 11 am Bermuda time Thursday morning.

8 am New York time starting – and 9 pm Manila time Thursday evening.

We also have our new Facebook page called Ozone Bermuda (“Ozone means the Olderhood Zone !!).

https://www.facebook.com/OzoneBermuda/

We’d love to hear from you in the show. Drop us a line or a comment – just be kind to us, it’s our first gig remember.

So, this oldest swinger in town is back on the airwaves.

Let’s ROCK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. The show will be on in CA at 5am! Can we see a re-broadcast? Do we have access to replay it at a more civil hour?
